Continue reading »]]> This afternoon, I was informed by my editor at ATRIA, Greer Hendricks, that next week I will be awarded Best Romance of 2012 at BookExpo America in New York City. It took me a while to even process what that means. To say that I appreciate this award is a gross understatement. I am more than proud to have received it, I feel validated in the choices I’ve made that have brought me to this point. I’m sure many of you will feel like my sales alone should be validation, and of course it is. I never miss an opportunity to thank my readers. Hell, BEAUTIFUL DISASTER is dedicated to my readers. Without them, I couldn’t have won this award.

I look around my office, at our new house, and at my son’s super cool blue walker that looks like a hot rod , and I think, I can’t believe how fortunate we are. I mean, two and a half years ago I stood in line to apply for food stamps with tears in my eyes. Not a lot of people know that when I published BEAUTIFUL DISASTER, I was a single mom struggling to get by. Knowing I couldn’t do it on my own was a tough thing to accept. I didn’t know where the money would come from to buy back-to-school clothes and backpacks, and I was overwhelmed with disappointment because I envisioned being somewhere much different at that stage in my life. This dark cloud hung over my head as I read over BEAUTIFUL DISASTER for maybe the sixth time, thinking This is pretty entertaining. I’ll just upload it and give my Providence readers something to read while waiting for Requiem [the sequel], but never once did I think that writing—my passion—would one day be my main source of income. BEAUTIFUL DISASTER brought in over a thousand dollars the first month it was published, and for me, that was like hitting the lottery. I never expected that less than a year from that date, my novel would be #6 on Amazon and then land on the New York Times list, and most importantly, not only would I be debt free, but all three of my children would have college funds.

I feel a little emotional thinking about one day in 2011, right before I got my first significant KDP check from Amazon. I looked into the disappointed eyes of my oldest daughter and said, “This is the last time we will be broke. I promise.” Nothing means more to me than coming through on that promise. And this award is the icing on the cake. It marks 2012 as the year our dreams came true; the first year I didn’t have to worry about how I would pay the electric bill, and the year I bought my first home.

BookExpo America may think they’ve just recognized my novel, but that award will take center stage in my home, reminding us all of what 2012 really meant for us as a family, and even when you’ve hit bottom, the universe may just be telling you that it’s time to start your climb.
